Letter From the Principal

Dear PS/IS 180 Families,

We are proud and excited to launch the 2018-19 school year with our incredibly talented and dedicated teaching staff and your ongoing support and partnership!

Our Jaguar community is growing. This school year, we are expanding our Dual Language program to Pre-K through 5th Grade. I am also pleased to share that we are expanding our network of on-site professional support so we can make a big impact in each and every classroom. We have staffed a Reading Specialist to support early reading and writing acquisition in Grades K-2 and make sure that every child completes the second grade reading at level. Also, we have added three Instructional Coaches, and a Culture & Climate Coach to support teaching, learning, and social-emotional wellness in Grades Pre-K through 8th Grade.

We take great pride in creating an educational atmosphere where students can learn in a caring and creative environment. To that end, we are introducing Jaguar Jumpstart with Roads to Success in Grades Pre-K through 5th Grade. It is a weekly pep rally that focuses on social-emotional learning. All students will have the chance to earn the famous Beads of Awesomeness as we celebrate positive behavior. In the elementary school classrooms, teachers will use Responsive Classroom’s Morning Meeting protocol to build community in their room daily. In the upper grades, middle school students will get to experience weekly Town Hall meetings to discuss topics of interest and promote college awareness through our College for All program. Upper grade students will also meet twice a week in small CREW groups with the same adult advisor for three years; we are partnering with NYC Outward Bound to enhance our advisory model. We strongly believe in relationship building and go above and beyond to make sure each student is known well by at least one adult in the building.

As we focus on student achievement, we will provide a variety of intervention and enrichment experiences that promote student growth and learning throughout the year. All students in Grades K-8 will engage in WIN (What I Need) periods for personalized learning. Kindergarten through 5th Grade students will experience weekly small group literacy support to push and challenge each and every child in reading and writing. We believe that students learn best through interactive play. Game-based learning reaches students at all levels. Therefore, we are pleased to continue with Guided Math on Fridays. In middle school, we are personalizing learning for students through our unique course offerings. Electives include Forensics, Speech & Debate, Health & Nutrition, Set Design, and Media Journalism. Upper grade classes also will experience Book Clubs, Blended Learning in Mathematics, and Genius Hour classes. Lastly, we are excited to now offer both the Living Environment Regents and Algebra Regents.

Have you heard the news? PS/IS 180 was selected as a NYC Mastery Collaborative Incubator School for middle school. It is a distinction shared with only forty middle and high schools around the city. Some of the top schools across the city are members of this elite cohort dedicated to advancing equity through personalizing learning for all students.

Excitingly, PS/IS 180 Hugo Newman College Preparatory has undergone some noteworthy changes and building upgrades, some of which include:

  • Installation of new Promethean Smartboards (Grades 3-8)
  • Installation of new Promethean Smartboards– arriving May/ June 2019 (Grades Pre-K-2)
  • Addition of 150 Chromebooks for each middle school student (Grades 6-8)
  • Installation of new technology lab with touchscreen desktops (Grades Pre-K-8)
  • Installation of soccer field and soccer equipment through US Soccer Foundation partnership (Grades Pre-K-8)
  • Investment in literacy with over 3,000 new books in English & Spanish added to our book rooms (Grades Pre-K-8)

PS/IS 180 Hugo Newman College Preparatory truly looks better than ever! I encourage all of you to attend Back to School Night on Thursday, September 20th, 2018 and take a tour. Childcare will be provided from 5:00- 8:00PM. Come hear live jazz, mingle with community partners, and meet your son/daughter’s teachers. During the upcoming school year, I encourage you to take an active role in your child’s learning. Parent involvement plays a critical role in our school’s success. I look forward to partnering with you to reach your child’s goals.

Here’s to another year of inspirational learning and memorable moments at PS/IS 180!

Warmly,

Jeneca Parker
